Most fast food is extremely processed, with a high proportion of salt, sugar, fat, preservatives and additives; low in fibre and nutrients. A natural, healthy diet, in comparison, contains a wide variety of unprocessed or raw foods, prepared as freshly as possible. But if you are a busy householder pressed for time, it may seem that there is just not enough time to prepare a spectacular feast from scratch every night. Here are some ideas to help you bridge the gap, and serve up some healthy meals for your family:

1. Obtain a slow cooker. These wonderful devices can cook your meat or chicken while you’re at work, then all you have to do is steam accompanying vegetables when you get home.

2. Keep that barbeque on the verandah operational over winter. This is a fast way to cook chicken or fish, then serve with some salad or steamed vegetables. If you do not have a barbeque, then a stove top char grill will do.

3. If you own a wok, meals can be created in just a few minutes using meat, vegetables and a spicy sauce.

4. When you create a labour intensive dish for dinner like tuna mornay or lasagne, make double. Serve half, and freeze the other half to reheat on a busy night.

5. Preparing a simple home made soup from scratch only takes 30 minutes. You could serve it with wholemeal bread on a cold winter’s night.

Taking a few minutes to prepare home cooked meals will give you and your family a better standard of nutrition. It will be easier on your wallet too!

Cooking has always been one of my favorite things to do. Besides the line of work I’m in, it’s something else I’m good at. I’ve grown up in my mom’s kitchen, looking at her cookbooks and listening to the sizzling sounds of saut?ing food and being familiar with the small accidents that sometimes happen.

A few days ago, I met up with an old officemate of mine who have since made a living as an entrepreneur. He had remembered how I once cooked the food for an office gathering and he wanted to ask a favor. Basically, he pitched an idea to me about me adding in some food to complement a booth he was going to set up at a fair. His idea was selling cold fruitshakes, which was pretty fun. I was on leave, so I decided I’d give it a try.

But what do you pair with fruitshakes? Most foods will work with them, but what would go well with them in particular? I cracked open the cookbooks in my kitchen, and after a while got to thinking that maybe I bit off a bit more than I could manage. Most of the food ideas dancing around in my head were a bit too unwieldy to be prepared in a fair booth properly. Burgers are easy to work with, but aren’t nothing special, really.

The answer to my dilemma is something spicy! Something to complement my friend’s fruitshakes. The original fallback plan was burgers and instead of going with that I decided to search for mom’s old chili recipes. I found one and started preparing it. After that, I pushed the idea a bit more and developed the chiliburger!

But it would’ve been weird to have chiliburgers and fruitshakes within the same one stall, so I met up with my friend again and proposed an idea of my own. Set me up with my own booth in close proximity to his. He took to the idea and pretty soon, we were in contact with the event organizers to get my very own stall.

You really need to have everything working well before you open the doors to your restaurant. You can be sure those that come in are going to pass along information about their experience. While you will continually need to tweak the way your restaurant is operating don’t open it without having some great concepts already in place. If you do there is an excellent chance many people will only visit your restaurant once. You want them to enjoy the overall experience so much that they will make it a regular place they frequent when they go out to eat

Even if you have excellent skills for running a successful restaurant, you can’t do it all on your own. You are going to have to hire employees to help you and that is one area you want to dedicate plenty of time to. Look for those with some basic restaurant business and a willingness to learn. You also want to look at their mannerisms and how they interact with people.

Those skills are hard to teach so focus on finding employees with such skills. Take the time to contact their past employers and references as well because this will offer you some information the applicant isn’t likely to share with you.

Another area where many restaurant owners fail to spend enough time is on training. Remember that the attitude and service from your employees is going to be a direct reflection of you and your business. Make sure they know the right way to greet customers, how to deal with unhappy customers, and the flow of the procedures that take place in your restaurant.

Even though you want the employees to take your restaurant business seriously, they need to have some fun too. Let their creativeness help you make your business a success. Be open to their ideas and suggestions so they feel like they are a part of the business. They will work harder for you when they feel like it is more than just a job they go to. The will be more likely to show up for their shifts and to stay employed with you for a long time if they are happy on the job.

Another key ingredient in the recipe for a successful business is keeping on top of ordering supplies. If you run out of something it can take several days to get it depending on where you order them from. You also don’t want to have too many extra items on hand as that ties up your money. A good restaurant owner makes sure they always have everything available to offer the items on the menu. This way customers aren’t disappointed when they come in and get told the meal they wanted isn’t available.

There are plenty of basic items you need to have on hand to operate your business including silverware, napkins, and straws. Offer a good selection of condiments as well because everyone has their own personal tastes. Make sure you work hard to keep the appearance of the restaurant looking nice both inside and out. You will find people don’t stop in if the outside of the building isn’t inviting.

If you are ready to take on the challenge of operating your own restaurant, make sure you know exactly what it involves. It can be a very rewarding experience if you take the time to cover all the bases. If you only want to focus on cooking though then you will be better off working in a restaurant instead of owning one.

Home cooks believe in using the remote control on the television to surf through the cooking shows on cable television. Other cooks, who are techno savvy, prefer to use the mouse on the laptop computer to surf the internet for the recipes they need and the portability of the device allows the television shows to be within reach. People are free to explore all types of strict recipe cooking options but the freedom that cooking from scratch brings is a revelation that frees many women from bonds of the past. Women feel free to sautee many types of vegetables at one time, where in the past it was traditional to only boil one type of vegetable, which was frozen, and usually frozen in a bag or as a small cube. The strict recipe cooking instructions stated on that bag were complied with week after week. No member of the family got excited about dinner anymore and product manufacturers knew that something had to be done. The type of strict recipes was changed and bolded for good measure but nobody in homes across America wanted to eat that way anymore.

Liberal recipes cooking have gained great popularity among young people, and many cooks across America studied Chinese cooking techniques. Cooking Chinese food at home made meals seem like take-out because the strict recipe cooking options were no longer systematic, but they were concise. Home cooks found that the strict cooking recipes only required a heat source and a bit of water added to a pan with the canned, bagged or sealed ingredients in a variety of containers for cooks to use to create a meal suitable for placement at the dinner table. Strict recipe cooking styles still live in many kitchens across America. Home cooks still rely on measuring cups and spoons to prepare meals to strict standards. The varieties of foods cooked at home has changed dramatically though and people are having fun while preparing meals together, which is a nice change from the servant styled meals that were prepared and presented in the past. People enjoying using various styles of cookware to get meals to the table or the styles allow meals to be served from a countertop.

First of all, do not be overwhelmed by the idea of selling your restaurant business. Keep in mind that the preparations you underwent while buying your restaurant is similar to the preparations when you are selling your restaurant business. With this in mind, try to remember the things that you looked for when you first considered opening/franchising your restaurant. Your buyers will be considering these options as well. So, these factors will greatly affect how fast your restaurant business will sell and how much it will sell for. You must put in at least 12 months of careful planning into the sale process. In other words, groom your restaurant for the upcoming sale. If you own a group of restaurants, consider whether you will be selling these as a group or offering them on a unit basis. This will help you get the best price. Have a plan of action in place and consider who your potential buyers could be. This will help you estimate a fair price. Decide on how you want to sell your restaurant. Do you want to franchise it, or sell it as a going concern? What are the outstanding liabilities? What are the tax repercussions? Aside from these factors there are also some requirements, documents and other pointers potential buyers look for when you advertise your restaurant business for sale: 1. Bookkeeping- Potential buyers like clean, organized and understandable books. Before listing your restaurant business for sale, check all your books for inconsistencies and other problems you might’ve let “slide”. These books also show your potential buyers what you are spending on and how much you are earning. It is recommended that you hire an accountant for this. 2. Good location – Potential buyers need to see where your restaurant is. Keep this in mind when placing an advertisement for your restaurant business for sale. Describe the location well (do not exaggerate) to attract potential buyers. Place a picture of the location and a vicinity map if you must. 3. Looks – Contrary to what most people believe, looks matter a lot. Before presenting your restaurant business for sale, repair any damages to the restaurant, repaint everything, clean the restaurant etc. You want the restaurant to look its best when you present it to the public. 4. Money Matters – Your business should have the potential of making a lot of money even if it isn’t making much at the moment. 5. Documents – Prepare all required documents such as summaries, financial statements, business statements, etc. Have these ready for potential buyers who will ask for copies of these for evaluation. If handling all these requirements seem overwhelming to you, as it does to most people, then it is highly recommended that you hire a business broker to manage the sale for you. That way, you have an experienced hand to guide you through the entire process.
